Model Search launches in the UK
PULSE, the Caribbean's
number one modeling agency,
is extending its search to find the next Caribbean
supermodel.
Following the huge
success of the agency's annual Caribbean Model
Search (CMS), this year Pulse has decided to
include young British women of Caribbean heritage
in their hunt to find a new catwalk superstar.
Over the past six years,
CMS has helped to discover 12 world-class models
who have gone on to score lucrative contracts
in the fashion world - from New York to London,
Paris and Milan.
These include Jaunel
McKenzie, presently the world's number one black
model, who appeared in Vogue (U.S. edition)
a record 11 times; Nadine Willis, the fastest
rising supermodel in history, who was hired
by British cosmetics brand Rimmel to appear
in an advertising campaign alongside Kate Moss
in 2005; and CMS 2005 winner Gaye McDonald,
who this year appeared on the cover of Japanese
fashion bible Luire and is featured in a stunning
18-page fashion editorial.
In 2006, a reality-TV
series that documented the entire CMS process
grabbed the attention of a strong and loyal
audience in the Caribbean. Michael Williams,
organizer of the CMS campaign in the UK is convinced
that Pulse can build on that audience in 2007
by incorporating British models with a Caribbean
heritage.
He said: "The
only supermodel of Caribbean heritage to be
discovered in the UK is Naomi Campbell, and
that was over 20 years ago! Yet, in the Caribbean
they discover two or three models every single
year who build successful careers, working with
top designers and magazines around the world.
It's time for us to create that success here.
"We know it won't
be easy, but we will be teaming up with leading
London model agency Select to scout all around
Britain. The winner will be signed to Select
in the UK and have worldwide opportunities with
Pulse. In addition, she will fly to Jamaica
to film the CMS TV series and compete against
winners from 12 other countries.
"This is a great
opportunity, so we're hoping that everyone who
knows someone with potential will encourage
them to enter."

Antigua
Carnival Comes to UK
GET YOUR costumes and
whistles ready because Antigua Carnival is coming
to the UK!
Some of the biggest names
in the Caribbean will be heading to Britain later
this month to host a selection of exclusive indoor
carnivals in London, Leicester and Birmingham.
The year 2007 marks the
50th anniversary of Antigua Carnival, and to celebrate
the occasion performers and representatives from
the beautiful island will be giving the UK audience
a taste of what is to come later this year.
Antiguan performers,
including Onyan & Burning Flames, Claudette
'CP' Peters, El-A-Kru featuring Tizzy, Eddie Mello
and Jamella Gregory (Miss Carnival 2006) will
be in town for the road show, which will take
place on:
Saturday 28th APRIL @
The Y Theatre, LEICESTER
Sunday 29th APRIL @ The
Stratford Circus, LONDON
Sunday 6th MAY @ The
Drum Theatre, BIRMINGHAM
For the history of Antigua
Carnival you have to step back in time to 1 August
1834 when slavery was abolished. People immediately
celebrated by taking to the streets to celebrate
their freedom and express their joy and happiness.
Over the years there
was a return to this informal celebration until
1957 when the first official Antiguan Carnival
was organised. Since then the festival has developed
into 10 days of music and dance, with street marches,
jump-ups and formal evening shows – calypso,
pan, and Carnival Queen pageants. The Carnival
culminates with a massive street party called
J'ouvert (meaning Day Break) where the dancing
literally goes on all night and stops mid morning! |

Leads the Way In Skin
Bleaching Debate
A
conference on the value of London's ethnic hair
and beauty businesses will highlight the dangers
of skin-bleaching in the Black, Asian and Minority
Ethnic (BAME) communities on Thursday, 18thJanuary,
2007 at City Hall in London.
The conference, entitled
'…the new black', will bring together BAME
beauty manufacturers, distributors and business
owners alongside representatives from the London
Development Agency, Health & Safety Executive
and local authorities to discuss challenges facing
the sector.
The event will feature
roundtable debates; first-hand testimonies from
victims of skin lightening abuse; and guest speakers
such as Anthony Wade MBE, author and co-founder
of Dyke & Dryden, Jennet Arnold, Greater London
Assembly member and Enoch Williams, founder of
Sahara Single Bible hair products.
The skin-lightening debate
follows the recent convictions of high street
retailers for selling illegal bleaching cosmetics
from their shops in southeast London.
Event organiser, Anne
Long-Murray, director of BAME business support
agency Salon Strategies and EBHA, says: "For
years, many of us in the industry have been lobbying
the magazines that carry the advertising for these
dangerous products and the retailers for continuing
to flout the law.
"Even those skin-lightening
creams that fall within legal limits are being
abused by consumers who are eager to raise their
social standing in certain ethnic communities.
Ironically, skin-lightening cosmetics are supposed
to raise low self-esteem, but many people are
left disfigured and highly vulnerable to skin
cancers." |
